BEGINNER BJJ GUIDE
Your first BJJ class in New Jersey: how to prepare.
A beginner-friendly guide to preparing for a first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class in New Jersey, including what to ask, what to wear, arrival time, hygiene, and choosing an academy.
Contact the academy before your first class
Confirm that the class accepts beginners and ask whether the academy wants you to book a trial, sign a waiver, or arrive at a particular time. Also confirm whether the class is gi or no-gi and whether loaner gear is available.
What to wear
For a gi class, ask whether the academy provides or rents a gi for first-time students. For no-gi, academies commonly use athletic clothing or grappling-specific gear, but rules vary. Avoid clothing with exposed zippers, buckles, or anything that could scratch a training partner.
Arrive early
Give yourself time to find the entrance and parking, meet staff, complete any paperwork, change, and hear basic rules. A first visit is easier when you are not rushing into a class already in progress.
Basic mat hygiene
Use clean training clothes, keep fingernails and toenails trimmed, remove jewelry, and follow the academy's footwear and mat rules. If you have a skin concern or are sick, contact the academy rather than training through it.
You do not need to be in shape first
Beginners arrive with different fitness and athletic backgrounds. Your first classes are primarily about learning how the room works, understanding positions and movements, and training safely rather than proving your conditioning.
What to evaluate during a trial
Pay attention to how beginners are introduced, how coaches supervise training, how partners treat each other, whether the schedule realistically fits your week, and whether the academy clearly explains its current membership terms.
