A drop-in is a visit to an academy where you are not a regular member. The host gym decides which sessions accept visitors, whether advance approval is required, and whether a visitor or mat fee applies.

Do not rely on an old social post or a third-party listing alone. Class schedules can change for holidays, tournaments, seminars, weather, or instructor availability. Confirm the academy, date, start time, and whether the session is gi, no-gi, class, or open mat.

Before traveling, check whether outside students are welcome, whether you need to contact the academy first, whether there is a drop-in fee, how payment works, and whether a waiver or advance registration is required. The academy's current policy controls.

Ask what equipment and uniform are expected. Some academies have color, patch, rashguard, or other uniform rules. Bring clean training gear and follow the host academy's hygiene and footwear policies.

Open mat describes the training format; drop-in describes your status as a visitor. An open mat is not automatically public or free. Read the open mat vs. drop-in guide →
