BJJ VISITOR GUIDE
BJJ drop-in etiquette: how to visit another academy respectfully.
Visiting another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy can be one of the best parts of training. A little preparation helps you respect the host gym, avoid preventable surprises and focus on good rounds.
Contact the academy before you travel
Do not assume every class or open mat accepts outside visitors. Check the academy’s current visitor policy, schedule and contact instructions. If anything is unclear, ask before making the trip.
Confirm the practical details
Verify the date, start time, address, gi or no-gi format, visitor fee if any, registration or waiver requirements, and whether advance approval is required. Time-sensitive information can change, so confirm it close to your visit.
Arrive early enough to check in
Give yourself time to introduce yourself, complete any required waiver or payment, change, and learn the room’s rules before class begins. Showing up after instruction has started can put staff in an awkward position.
Introduce yourself honestly
Tell staff or the instructor that you are visiting and share your home academy and rank when asked. Do not represent an unverified rank, affiliation or membership as something the host gym has confirmed.
Follow the host gym’s rules
Academies differ on uniforms, footwear, lining up, sparring etiquette, filming, starting positions and other customs. The host academy’s rules apply while you are in its room.
Train like a guest, not a challenger
Match your partner’s pace, communicate clearly, release submissions promptly and prioritize control. A drop-in is an opportunity to learn and meet new training partners—not a test of which academy is better.
Bring appropriate gear and hygiene
Bring the equipment required for the session, clean training gear and basic personal items you normally need. If you are unsure about uniform rules, ask the academy rather than assuming your usual gear is acceptable.
Respect the academy’s business
If there is a drop-in fee, follow the academy’s stated payment process. Do not pressure staff for a free visit because another gym waives fees. Visitor policies are set by the host academy.
Open mat and drop-in are not synonyms
A visitor can drop into an open mat or another permitted session, and an open mat is not automatically public or free. See the
open mat vs. drop-in guide → for the distinction.
